While I voted for President Obama, I’ve questioned his decision to avoid or distance himself from the topic of “race.” I have however admired Michelle Obama’s subtle yet powerful action of going to schools populated by lower income African American students. By doing so, she gently allows us to see that these kids are very much like any other kids, except they may be starting life with far less than many of us.
Yesterday, when I saw President Obama in Ghana at the “door of no return,” I felt like he took a page out of Michelle’s playbook. Here he was with his wife and kids, standing at a spot where untold numbers of African men and women went from being treated like humans to being treated like slaves. My wife and I both wondered why this story doesn’t immediately come to mind as the Holocaust does.
To me, it has to do with power. President Obama, like Kings, Jesus, and the King of Pop now has the power to make this story known, just like powerful Jewish voices have made the horrors of the Holacaust known. And by doing so, the President was reminding us that we have come along way from slavery to electing the first African American President of the United States. And there is no going back.
