It’s hot-sticky hot-the kind of hot that requires a cold shower and lots of baby powder to cool you down. I should put on the air conditioner. But I am waiting for a sign that it is officially summer and I can do this. We have had so many near summer like days only to be followed by cold, wet days. I am not one to talk or write about the weather, but I can’t imagine ignoring it tonight.
Today we went to J’s last day of pre-school in Yellow Room. The walls were bare. The kids photographs used to designate their sitting spots on the carpet were gone. The toys were all put away. And the teachers were all seated on a bench together. One of J’s friends joked with me by having one foot in the classroom and one foot out the door. He was quite amused by the one foot being out the door. It must be wierd to have shared a whole year of their lives in this very sacred space and then open it up to adults and then leave it for someone else to use. It reminds me of Buddhists monks building and creating art with sand, only to let it go when they are done.
J was so excited to see us, he could barely sit in the circle with his classmates.
Seeing and feeling his joy that we were there was worth more than all the songs they sang. It felt like it was so important to him that we were there. As the younger son, he is often shuttled to Ry’s activities, so it felt great to be there for him. As they called his name, and gave him his homemade year book, he was very interested in showing us every picture, drawing, and comment. Tonight, instead of reading a book, he suggested we look through his book one more time. I have a feeling we’ll be doing alot of that this summer.
